Joining

Spring Rush 2012

The informal process of joining a fraternity is called rush. Rush occurs in the beginning of each semester and is an opportunity to come check out the fraternity and the activities it offers. Even if you have no interest in joining, we encourage all students to come out and participate in the fun social events. If the fraternity is a good fit for you, you will be extended an invitation to join the house. The Spring 2012 Rush Schedule is shown below, and most events are held at our house at 2430 Piedmont Avenue (at the intersection with Haste). Rush is a great time to drop by and introduce yourself if you haven’t had a chance to do so before. All events are free of charge and transportation is provided.

IIf you have any questions about rush or interest in joining, please do not hesitate to contact Cliff Zimmerman (czimmerman@berkeley.edu).

Academics

Although social events dominate the calendar, we understand that everyone here is first a student and that academics come first. We strive to promote academic achievement among our brothers, contributing to our high-ranking house GPA and a climate that reinforces the educational mission of our campus. In fact, AEPi has held the title for highest GPA of any Greek organization at Cal in many recent semesters. Several current brothers have perfect 4.0 GPAs and we have had a 100% Haas acceptance rate the last four years. Graduates attend top graduate programs and work in top firms. Check out our alumni page to learn more about some of our successful brothers.

Philanthropy

Social responsibility is something that Alpha Epsilon Pi strives to instill on an international and local level. Every year at our international convention the brothers of AEPi vote to adopt one or more beneficiaries for all of our collective fundraising efforts. The current international philanthropies are the Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem and the Gulf Coast rebuilding efforts related to Hurricane Katrina.

Each chapter raises money for these causes in their own way, and our chapter likes to combine traditional events like bowling night fundraisers with more novel approaches like the philanthro-taxi, which offers students the opportunity to be transported to class via golf cart for a modest donation to one of our chosen causes.

Because money is not the only resource for which there is unmet need, our chapter also organizes events like the Gift of Life bone marrow registration drive and American Red Cross blood drives, both of which were organized with the help of Berkeley Hillel. The blood drives benefit people all around the country, and the Gift of Life program is aimed at addressing the unique difficulties faced by Jewish patients looking for matching bone marrow donors, which arise from the havoc inflicted on European Jewry by the Nazi Holocaust.

We recognize that our own philanthropic and fundraising efforts would be impossible without the help of other members of our community, so we try to reciprocate by supporting the charitable initiatives of other organizations on campus.

Our most recent annual philanthropy project has been the Family Feud game show where campus organizations compete against each other in Berkeley related trivia. A preview of the event can be seen below.

Social

The social events dominate the calendar here at Cal. Here is a taste of what you can expect every year:

Every Semester there is a formal, where Brothers can invite a date out to enjoy entertainment, a yacht, a hotel ballroom or another elegant and exotic venue.

Exchanges are private events between a sorority and fraternity with a special theme. It may be Librarians and Barbarians, a paint party, or even a classy Wine and Cheese Social.

There are multiple parties spread throughout the semester, some big, some small. Regardless of the occasion, it’s an opportunity to just kick back and have a good time.

The most important thing to know about the Social scene at AEPI is that it can be whatever you want it to be. You have the opportunity to network or just party with tons of men and women from all over.

Every event is something to look forward to and being a brother means being able to have a party with all your friends at your house.

Judaism

Alpha Epsilon Pi is the only nationally Jewish fraternity. While many other historically Jewish fraternities have abandoned this aspect of their identities, AEPi has chosen to embrace it. Our ultimate mission is to train Jewish leaders, and in pursuit of this goal we involve ourselves extensively in the local and global Jewish communities.

One of the primary ways that our chapter contributes to the greater Jewish community is through philanthropy. A large portion of the money raised for philanthropic purposes by AEPi chapters all around North America goes to benefit Jewish causes like the Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem or the Chai Lifeline, which provides services for families with children who have cancer.

In addition to our philanthropic efforts we make our mark on the local Jewish community through leadership and unique events. At our house we hold Passover Seders and light Chanukah candles. On campus we are extensively involved with Berkeley Hillel and the Chabad Jewish Student Center.

Most importantly, everyone is allowed to practice as they wish and choose which activities they wish to participate in. There is a place for all Jewish students here, whether secular or orthodox.

Alumni

Programs and Events for Alumni

Alumni relations are an emerging priority at XA and we are working hard to get our alumni more involved in all sorts of events and activities. Alumni are always welcome at our football barbeques and we marked the most recent Big Game against Stanford with our Annual Alumni Drink & Dine in San Francisco. If you are an alumnus and were not notified of this event it probably means we do not have your contact information, so please do us a favor and submit it to our Alumni Relations Chair.
